Welcome to Year 8

’Only You Can Control Your Future.

During year 8 students will continue to develop their acquisition of skills, deepen their knowledge and raise their aspirations.

Having mastered their transition into secondary education through year 7, this year students will further extend their abilities across all subjects within the curriculum and enrich their holistic education further through the range of extracurricular opportunities available to them.

It is important during this year that all students remain fully focused on improving their outcomes and developing as individuals to ensure they meet their full academic abilities and enable themselves to be fully prepared for the next phase of education leading into their GCSE choices and beyond.

During this time, they will be fully supported by all members of the academy, in particularly from their year team which include, Achievement Team Leader Mrs Compton and the Pastoral Team for Year 8, Miss Ferris.

Both Mrs Compton and the Pastoral Team work closely with all stakeholders in the students education – Subject Teachers, Subject Leads, Senior Leadership Team, the Attendance Team, Parents and Outside Agencies to ensure that students are able to access all aspects of their education and be given the support needed in order to reach their full potential.

Within the team are the student’s year 8 form tutors, who are their daily point of contact both first thing in the morning and at the end of each day. Their tutors who will not only be on hand to assist them with the daily organisation of their school day and support their emotional and social wellbeing but to work with the group and students as individuals to increase their awareness, responsibilities and ownership of their studies, academic development and progress.

A successful school experience relies on positive team work between the school, the students and the parents/carers.

We ask for the parent’s support by ensuring students have outstanding attendance and punctuality, arrive at school every day fully equipped and ready to learn and to communicate regularly, both through the students planner and through further contact with the year team and/or subject teachers where necessary. It is through this successful partnership that students can be fully supported and ready to thrive in all aspects of their education.

It is expected that all students display good or outstanding learning behaviours at all times, are engaged in their studies and contributing to a positive learning environment in which all students can excel.

Students within year 8 are encouraged to complete independent learning in addition to their set homework, this may be as reading for pleasure, reading around the subjects/topics covered or developing their understanding of subject specific content through further independent research or further tasks/reading requested from their teachers. This does not have to be exhaustive, but allows students to develop their skill set of independent enquiry and further enhance their learning experience.

We are on hand to discuss any concerns or queries you may have about your child’s education and progress throughout year 8, so please feel free to contact your child’s form tutor and the year team so we can assist you.

We look forward to working with you,

Mrs Compton
