Welcome to Year 8
“Always do your best. What you plant now, you will harvest later.” -Og Mandino
This is a very important year for our year 8 students; having settled into life at secondary school last year, the focus this year is on developing good habits and independence in students’ learning. Every student in Year 8 is seen as a young adult, capable of making the right decisions about their learning as well as their behaviour.
During this year your child will be supported by the Achievement Team Leader Mr Avraamides and Year Care Team Mrs Klein. Mr Avraamides and Mrs Klein will work closely with the teachers, curriculum team leaders, attendance team and Senior Leadership Team to ensure that your child has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
The year 8 tutor team will be their first port of call for any concerns; your child will see their tutors at the beginning of the day to receive any announcements and address any issues, they will also see their tutors at the end of the day to follow up on any challenges the students may face.
Our Academy Code of Conduct states our expectations for students’ behaviour and conduct, “be in the right place, at the right time, doing the right thing”, this will allow our students to be as successful as possible.
We believe that parental engagement is crucial for our students to be successful as students may find their time learning both daunting and challenging. Developing a positive working relationship with the parents of our students is very important going forward and we would like to welcome parents and carers to contact the academy to raise any concerns your child may be facing.
Students’ work will be acknowledged and as we further develop our reward system the students who display excellence in their work and effort will be rewarded with certificates, positive letters home and visits linked to our curriculum. Sanctions will be used if students do not meet our standards and expectations and we ask that parents support us when sanctions are put into place.
The SEND and EAL department, run by Ms Haken, will offer students the support needed to reach and surpass their targets.
Year 8 can be a pivotal year for your child, it is in this year that our students begin to take steps in shaping their future career paths. At Cecil Jones we aim to improve the learning environment to support your child’s progress to reach their full potential.
